Art trail features 24 Bristol sketchers

By Sarski Anderson  Monday Mar 14, 2022

With support from the EU Welcome Back Fund, administered by Bristol City Council, Park Street art supplies shop Cass Art recently ran a competition for Bristol sketchers, asking them to “capture the city” in an A3 artwork of their chosen style.

The funding is intended for projects that are encouraging people to return to the high street after the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021.

Cass Art were inundated with applications, and the first 100 to apply received a free art pack including sketching materials to help ensure that cost would not be prohibitive for participants.

Submissions were wildly diverse, ranging from colourful and vibrant abstract creations to thoughtful, photo realistic studies in graphite, and everything in between.

A panel of judges selected 24 winning images to be included in the Sketch Bristol Art Trail, which runs from March 14-28.

Most of the places on the trail map are independent businesses in and around Park St, with an interest in art and creativity. They include Flying Saucers, Makers, Bristol Thrift Store, Illustrate, and Cloakroom Café.

Featured artists include Ceri Donovan, Lucy Kelleway, Asha Sparks, Andy Gray, Phil Potts – category winner for ‘Capturing the Bristol Spirit’ and Barbara Sawyer Rammelkamp – category winnner for ‘Street View’.

Cass Art expressed their gratitude to Larry Newman at Bristol City Council for assisting with the funding application process.

They were also overwhelmed by the response to the competition call out from local artists, both professional and amateur.

Respondents included a group of college students learning English as a foreign language, many of whom are refugees or asylum seekers.

“We are indebted to the artists of Bristol, of all levels of experience and abilities, for embracing the theme and producing pictures from the heart”.
