Artist of the Month: Catherine Knight
This month’s artist is Catherine Knight, whose limited edition prints of Boathouse, Pellinge and original painting Island are exclusively available through our online shop.
Catherine Knight is a painter, working in oils and watercolours, who works from Bedminster’s BV Studios. Her landscapes are built up using many delicate layers, capturing scenes with beautiful simplicity.
“I think being a painter is a ‘slow burn’ kind of career,” Catherine says of her chosen vocation. “It can be hard as there are not many markers and you have to follow your own path.” That is exactly what the Cornish artist has done, with the help of a dedicated teacher.
is needed now More than ever
“After studying for my BA in Cardiff, I did an artist’s residency in York before moving to Bristol to study an MA in Fine Art at Bath Spa University. I had an amazing art teacher at school who really encouraged me and set me on my path to becoming an artist. I haven’t looked back since.”
The work Catherine is selling through Bristol24/7 is a view from the Pellinge archipelago of Finland, captured on a research trip in 2016. “I wanted to experience the midnight sun and long light evenings,” Catherine says. “This painting is based on the journey we took by boat to reach the extremely remote island of Klovharu. It was a bright, hazy day with a kind of milky light and you could hardly tell the difference between the sky and the water at some points.
“I loved the simplicity of this boathouse and I have made a few works based on it. I hope to transport the viewer from their everyday life and see my landscapes as both literal representations of the world and metaphors for internal states.”
Catherine is about to embark on a new project with Bristol Artists Exchange Project, exploring the twinned cities of Bristol and Hannover. “I will be making new works based on a recent trip to the city and the work will be shown in Hannover in July and Bristol in 2019. The fact that Bristol was one of the first cities to reach out in friendship to Germany after World War II speaks volumes about the kind of forward-thinking city this is,” Catherine says.
She will also be exhibiting her works, along with 120 other residents, during the annual open studios event at BV Studios on April 22.
Profits from Catherine’s artwork sold through Bristol24/7 will be donated to Arnos Vale Trust, who care for the 45-acre cemetery in Totterdown. “It’s free to visit, full of wildlife and a place that can really help to clear your head – one of Bristol’s hidden gems,” Catherine says.
