Artist of the Month: We Wonder
Theatre designer Laura McEwen and graphic designer Dominic Mallin combine their skills to create three dimensional, mixed-media collages of buildings and landmarks from a bygone era.
Laura has designed many national and international shows, while Dominic has worked with a variety of design agencies. It was in 2013 that they decided to work together on their collaboration We Wonder.
They live in Redland with their two young children and enjoy wandering the streets off Whiteladies Road and cycling across the Downs. Laura also immerses herself within Bristol’s artistic community through the Centrespace cooperative.
is needed now More than ever
“We love our new lifestyle here, combining the buzz of the city with the countryside scenery so close by and an endless list of things to do,” they tell Bristol24/7.
Bristol’s beautiful scenery is a constant source of inspiration for Laura and Dominic. Rock’s Garage, available exclusively from our online shop, captures the charm of a unique and beautifully restored garage on Princess Victoria Street in Clifton Village.
Laura and Dominic have played with bold colours and striking lettering to capture its unique personality and history.
“When we first explored the streets of Bristol, this stood out on the road as representing the amazing past, and strong links to engineering and Clifton Rocks Railway,” the pair explain.
“The quirky typography and layout caught our eye. We love discovering new buildings that interest us, especially the unsung heroes with a visual style of their era.”
Once they have chosen their subject, Laura and Dominic photograph it from all angles, capturing the detail and unique features.
They then play with the images digitally and develop a final three dimensional layout, building up their favourite elements. The results are striking pictures full of character, history and personality.
A limited edition of 100 copies of Rock’s Garage, measuring 30cm x 30cm, are available exclusively for Bristol24/7 readers – £220 unframed (RRP £265) and £257 framed – from our friends at The Little Framing Company.
Framing partner Seb Reed explains his framing decision: “This 3D piece of the Rocks Garage in Clifton really stands out. We decided to keep the frame simple and contemporary to compliment the angular nature of the work.”
The frame is a whitewashed ash box frame, with a white slip.
