Artist sells paintings from floating gallery

By Martin Booth  Friday Sep 28, 2018

Dressed in a traditional Japanese kimono, Haruna Hidaka maneuvered her canal boat into its new berth in the Harbour Inlet opposite the SS Great Britain.

After tying up the boat close to Broken Dock, Haruna then opened its back doors and set up what she calls her ‘floating gallery’.

The Tokyo-born artist prefers to sell her paintings directly to buyers, not putting any prices on her work in order to start a conversation – many of which took place on Thursday evening as the sun started to set over the Floating Harbour.

“I love showing my own paintings,” she told Bristol24/7. “If somebody wants to buy my art, then maybe I will show them the price.”

Thirty-six-year-old Haruna has previously sold her paintings from the boat, called Double Kiss and once owned by snooker player Ronnie O’Sullivan, in Bath and Bradford-on-Avon.

“It’s really enjoyable,” she said. “I’m really happy to give people the opportunity to talk about my paintings.”
