Atelier21: the inspiration arising from four artists sharing space
Atelier21 is an art studio in Bedminster, offering facilities for printmaking, photographic processes, and space to hire.
They also offer expert tuition in printmaking processes – including etching, photopolymer, drypoint, monoprinting and relief.
Aiming to be more than the sum of its parts, the setup of the Atelier21 workspace offers scope for the four artists that share it to exchange ideas, opportunities and techniques, despite their very different practices.
is needed now More than ever
Theadora Ballantyne-Way – surrealist and specialist in print and video
Taking everyday objects and juxtaposing them with romanticised suburban landscapes, Ballantyne-Way is a surrealist artist with a love of transformation. “Mundane utensils become monumental industrial components,” she explains; “[they become] objects of aesthetic consideration and bizarre emblems of middle-class terror.”
Her work has been exhibited nationally, including at the Royal Academy’s prestigious Summer Exhibition and the International Original Print Exhibition at Bankside Gallery. She was the winner of the RBSA’s Print Prize 2022.

Virginia Bridge – printmaker and specialist in etching
Bridge makes work that explores the human experience of geometric form, space, material and surface. She is especially preoccupied with the capacity for objects and images, both natural or manufactured, to garner an emotional response in the viewer: “Our responses to these encounters may be conscious or unconscious, rational or irrational, fleeting or lingering, pleasurable or repugnant, trivial or overwhelming”.

Barry Cawston – photographic artist
Cawston has exhibited internationally, and has received numerous awards for his photographic art, including the President’s Award at the Royal West of England (RWA) Open Photography Exhibition. His work was used at Banksy’s so-called ‘bemusement park’ in Weston-super-Mare, Dismaland. Current projects include work to document the fictional story of a WWII spitfire pilot, to be shown at his house in Axbridge, Somerset.

Soraya Schofield – multidisciplinary artist
Schofield is an artist and photographer, who also works as a collaborator and curator at The Drugstore Gallery in Axbridge. She has a BA in Drawing and Applied Arts, and an MA in multidisciplinary printmaking. Drawing creative inspiration from her experience growing up as an adopted girl of colour in the UK, Schofield interweaves the imagery of politics, mythology and identity into her work.
