Banksy artwork shreds itself after £1m auction sale

One of Banksy’s most famous works has self-destructed after it was sold at auction in London.

Seconds after Girl With Balloon was sold at Sotheby’s for £1.042m on Friday night, the canvas suddenly passed through a shredder installed within the frame.

Posting a picture of the moment on Instagram, Banksy wrote: “Going, going, gone…”

“It appears we just got Banksy-ed,” said Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s senior director and head of contemporary art in Europe.

It is unknown whether the 2008 spraypaint piece by the Bristol-born artist will now be more expensive than it was prior to being shredded.
