Banksy opens a hotel in Bethlehem

By Kate Wyver  Saturday Mar 4, 2017

Bristol-born Banksy has been busy in Bethlehem.

The artist’s first venture since Dismaland in Weston-super-Mare in 2015 is The Walled Off Hotel, a working hotel that lies on the barrier of Israeli and Palestinian territory in the West Bank.

“Walls are hot right now, but I was into them long before Trump made it cool,” Banksy told Channel 4 News. See more photos of the hotel on the Channel 4 News website.

The Walled Off Hotel has nine rooms and one presidential suite, all filled with new artworks by Banksy, and is situated next to the 425-mile-long Israeli West Bank barrier.

The hotel also features artwork by Palestinian artists and reportedly has a colonial theme, perhaps to demonstrate the part Britain had to play in the current political situation.

An exhibition inside the hotel also features an installation of a recreation of the Balfour declaration, the 1917 issue promising Jews a state in Palestine.
