Banksy’s Grim Reaper replaced

By Emma Woodward  Wednesday Oct 21, 2015

A new Grim Reaper has appeared on the Thekla next to the spot occupied by the original Banksy stencil.

Return of the Grim Reaper, by Bristol street artist John D’Oh, is a temporary installation stuck on with magnets on the side of the boat facing the Floating Harbour.

Banksy’s original, which depicts a skeletal reaper rowing, was removed from the hull of the Thekla during maintenance last year and now resides at the M Shed where it is on a long-term loan.

While the boat was in the dry dock, Inkie, another Bristol graffiti artist, replaced Banksy’s work with a piece in his own distinctive style.

John D’oh’s piece is next to an original Inkie where Banky’s stencil used to be located

The original Banksy was removed from the hull in August 2014

John D’oh has gained national attention after his recent work in Weston-super-Mare portraying Paris Hilton sporting Mini Mouse ears and wearing a Dismaland top was mistaken for an original Banksy.

Other notable recent works of his include a “Tobacco Factory Refugees Welcome” sign, produced following remarks from city mayor George Ferguson that he would house refugees in his apartment.

On his latest creation, John D’oh told Bristol24/7: “I love that boat, it is a piece of Bristol and I always looked at Banksy’s Reaper and admired it.

“When my friend Inkie replaced the Grim Reaper while the boat was in dry dock it dawned on me that I should put one back.”
