Big Jeff commissioned to paint new artwork at Southmead Hospital

By Martin Booth  Monday Nov 14, 2022

Big Jeff has been adding a splash of colour to Southmead Hospital during his recovery from serious burns suffered in a house fire.

Bristol’s most famous gig goer has been commissioned by the hospital to paint a window in association with Fresh Arts.

Fresh Arts is the arts programme for North Bristol NHS Trust, which aims “to harness the power of creativity and the arts to make a positive difference to our patients, visitors and staff”.

Before his accident, Jeff was a prolific painter, with his works exhibited at the Bristol Beacon and The Island.

A fundraising page has also been set up to raise money for Fresh Arts and Southmead Hospital Charity.

Jeff has been in Southmead since August following the fire at his flat in Totterdown.

His most recent successful surgery has been a pioneering treatment to help release some tightness in his neck.

There is another planned procedure soon, with Jeff possibly able to return home after this with a support plan in place.

In place of his almost nightly gigs, Jeff has been able to go on some short walks and also attend several soundchecks during the afternoons, which his manager Lee Dodds says that “he has enjoyed hugely and this has really helped to lift his spirits”.
