Bristol Photo Festival’s summer 2021 exhibitions to launch
With many cultural venues, including museums and art galleries, due to reopen on May 17, many of Bristol Photo Festival‘s inaugural series of exhibitions will begin across the city.
The biennial festival will see all of the city’s major arts institutions come together to display work from artists across the globe. Eight exhibitions will open in May and June as the cultural world comes back to life.
Island Life: A portrait of Britain, Beyond the Frame and Lips Touched with Blood at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and Jo Spence: From Fairy Tales to Phototherapy at Arnolfini will open on May 18, followed by Thames Log at the Martin Parr Foundation and IN PROGRESS: Laia Abril – Hoda Afshar – Widline Cadet – Adama Jalloh – Alba Zari at the RPS on May 20.

A symposium on inclusive collaboration and commitment to change will also be held on May 21. Keynote speaker Vanley Burke will be joined by speakers including Joy Gregrory, Dexter McLean, David Constantine, Joanne Coates, Kirsty MacKay and Dr Shawn Sobers.

Exhibitions will continue to open throughout the summer months. The Floating Harbour will be shown at Underfall yard on June 20, and Growing Spaces at Royal Fort Gardens and Elective Affinities at BPF Public Gallery will also open on the same day.
A series of screenings and events which will explore the creative relationship between the still and the moving image will also launch at the Watershed during June.
From Photography to Cinematography will feature the film work of cinematographers such as Ed Lachman, Hélène Louvart and Seamus McGarvey.
‘When we established Bristol Photo Festival in mid 2019 and began to put together this programme with our festival funders, venue partners and curators we could never have imagined that we would be launching it during such period in global history,” says festival director Tracy Marshall-Grant.
“Our theme, A Sense of Place, has taken on an even greater resonance and relevance after 12 months of life restricted within a global pandemic.
“It is with great pride that myself, Alejandro Acin and the rest of the festival team and partners announce the inaugural programme of this first edition of Bristol Photo Festival.”
