‘Bristol’s smallest art gallery’ opens

By Daisy Parry  Thursday Nov 23, 2023

A unique new art space has opened inside a shipping container in Totterdown.

Dubbed “Bristol’s smallest art gallery”, the space just off Wells Road on the corner of Firfield Street is currently exhibiting work by artist and portrait photographer Maria Mochnacz.

For decades, Mochnacz has collected, categorised and archived the discarded, thrown-away momentoes and souvenirs of her ‘foundland’. The resulting exhibition, Foundland, is now on display at The Museum of Totterdown, which was founded by arts curator John O’Connor.

Mochnacz’s extensive collection of categorised and discarded momentoes and souvenirs will be showing at the tiny art space until Saturday. The artwork is an accumulation of collected, classified everyday materials.

Since opening on Thursday,  the small gallery has already attracted hundreds of visitors.

This project has received funding from Bristol City Council, aiming to shine a light on arts, heritage, education and community engagement. This small container is part of a larger community project that hopes to regenerate and improve the small green just off Wells Road for new generations.

The area has received funding from the West of England Combined Authority’s Community Pollinator Fund to enhance the natural space on the community green.

With plans to rejuvenate ecosystems and encourage a stronger sense of community in the area, the showing of Mochnacz’s work here is just the start. This exhibition will be the beginning of a larger project, adding a popup cafe and meeting room on the common too.

Visitors can find the Museum of Totterdown at The Container, Zone A, Wells Road, corner of Firfield Street, Totterdown.
