Creating spontaneous, out of context art

By Lowie Trevena  Wednesday Jan 6, 2021

With almost 3,000 followers on Instagram, Spontaneous Objects is an art project that has produced more than 700 pieces of artwork in less than three years.

Spontaneous Objects – the name of the project and the alias of the artist – take objects and scenes and illustrates them out of context.

“I created Spontaneous Objects at university whilst my partner had to go back to their home country of Nigeria to renew their student visa,” says the anonymous artist.

“The project didn’t initially start with me drawing individual objects, or items separated from their context. It started with a fine liner drawing that included objects that held sentimental value in our relationship.”

The project has developed and evolved over the past three years

They then showed their lecturers, who suggested they illustrate individual objects for their end of year project.

“The project officially started in March 2018, the first Illustration I posted online being an acorn,” says the artist.

“Over time, my drawing style has changed to be both more realistic and faster, which was a much needed adaption as I have had part time and even full time jobs to contend with, so my time has been limited.”

They have drawn 714 objects to date, ranging from old washing line hooks to pastry brushes.

The artist has also launched a side project, Spontaneous Scenes, illustrating close up spaces. In 2020, they also started drawing portals, saying: “Creating objects that don’t exist has allowed me to be a little more imaginative and use the project as a form of escapism whilst the world seemed to get more and more chaotic.”

Spontaneous Objects began illustrating portals during the pandemic

Spontaneous Objects remains anonymous to allow their art to take centre stage, and because it is safer for them.

Reactions to the project remain positive, with them saying: “It’s so rewarding to read comments from people who have really connected with my work, whether it be an object that holds a special place in their heart because they have attached memories to it, or just general affinity for objects such as myself.

“The online art community is one of the reasons I love creating as much as I do! There is positivity everywhere!”
