Debut photographic exhibition from Amy Koenig hosted at The Mount Without

By Sarski Anderson  Thursday Apr 20, 2023

Originally from Florida, Amy Koenig has made Bristol her newly adopted home, having lived in the city for the past 18 months.

Although she was aware of the vibrant art scene before moving, the community of artists has been a welcome revelation to her.

“I love the fact that Bristol is big enough to be able to constantly discover new artists,” she says, “but small enough that you are bound to cross paths with the same creatives frequently enough to form genuine connections. It’s been an absolute pleasure so far.”

Koenig is an artist and photo-maker, who has recently completed a Masters in Photography at UWE.

Her debut exhibition Aphelion is currently being exhibited at The Mount Without, with an official party in the venue’s majestic crypt on April 25 – replete with live music and a full bar.

“I’ve always been interested in showing my work in unconventional spaces,” she reflects, “and I feel like the overall dark aesthetic of the space matches the mood of my images really nicely.”

As a visual artist, Koenig cites cinema, and specifically horror, as a key influence, and finds herself drawn to explorations of those ‘in between’ moments of mystery and suspense that are so characteristic of that genre.

The images in Aphelion are also shaped by our human response to the vastness of space, and the philosophical questions that abound from making sense of our place within the universe.

“Why are we here?” she ponders. “What comes after this?

“These are the questions that both keep me up at night, yet comfort me. This work isn’t about trying to find all the answers, but more so about finding peace in the uncertainties.

“By seeking out the magic in our everyday surroundings, my aim is to bridge the gap between what is known to be real and what is yet to be discovered.”

Amy Koenig: Aphelion is at The Mount Without until April 30. The exhibition party is on April 25 at 6-10pm; admission is free and booking is not required. More information is available at www.amykoenigart.com.
