Exclusive St Paul’s Carnival images from Martin Parr

By Steve Wright  Monday Jul 8, 2019

Here are a selection of images from St Paul’s Carnival 2019, taken by Bristol’s world-renowned photographer Martin Parr and given exclusively to Bristol24/7.

The photos perfectly capture Carnival in all its energy, colour, vibrancy and inclusivity.

Elsewhere, a three-way collaboration between Carnival, Arnolfini and the Martin Parr Foundation saw a group of photographers on the street documenting the weekend’s festivities.

Their work will be exhibited at Arnolfini from July 12, with a pop-up studio showing the selection process in action until then.

The group was led by Martin Parr, joined by leading street photographer Matt Stuart and Bristol-based Lua Ribeira, a nominee member of Magnum Photos and joint winner of the 2018 Jerwood/Photoworks Award.

All the images taken at Carnival are being reviewed and edited at the Martin Parr Foundation in the Paintworks.

The best photographs will be processed and printed in a pop-up studio in the Arnolfini galleries from July 9-12, open to the public and sponsored by Epson and Wex Photo Video. A number of the participants and contributors to the exhibition are from the St Pauls community.

Visitors can try and spot themselves in the images, as well as watching the whole process of turning digital files into photographs being installed on the walls.

Throughout the course of the week the exhibition will evolve each day, before the final selection and installation is unveiled at the opening party on Friday, July 12, just six days after Carnival. The exhibition then runs until August 11.

Carnivalgoers themselves can be part of the exhibition by tagging any images they have taken during the celebrations with #CarnivalPopUp19 on Instagram.

The opening party will feature live music, costumes and dancing, promising to take us back to Carnival. All are welcome at this colourful celebration of another brilliant event.

Arnolfini’s pop-up studio runs from July 9-12, 11am-6pm. The exhibition opening party takes place on July 12, with the exhibition running until August 11. For more information, visit www.arnolfini.org.uk/whatson/photography-carnival-pop-up
