Exhibition to celebrate 50 years of Ugandan Asians’ arrival to the UK
An artist who fled the Idi Amin regime with her family as a child is putting on an exhibition to celebrate 50 years of Ugandan Asians arriving in the UK.
Harshinder Sirah is holding an art exhibition at The Mount Without to remember and retell the stories of thousands who were expelled from the country in 1972.
The exhibition is informed by her experience of growing up in the UK after being forced to flee from her birthplace, Mbarara Uganda, and her frequent trips to her homeland as an adult.
is needed now More than ever
Through the work, Harshinder intends to celebrate the achievements of those who settled in the UK and generate funds to support children and adults with special needs.

The exhibition will feature a collection of Harshinder’s original paintings, prints and greetings cards and performances and displays of African memorabilia.
She has worked in acrylic and oil pastels, augmenting pieces with sand, soil, fabric and other artefacts from her travels to create an immersive multimedia experience.
All paintings in the exhibition are available for purchase. Ten per cent of proceeds will be donated to Special Friends Club, a charity which supports children with special needs and their families in Bristol, and the Auro Foundation, a charity providing education to vulnerable young adults in Uganda.
The exhibition will be open to the public from Monday, October 24 – Thursday, November 3, 11am-3pm at The Mount Without, Upper Church Ln, Bristol BS2 8FN.
