Featured Local Artist: Laura Wady
Laura Wady is an artist currently living and working in Bristol. Whether inspired by the human body, carnival, mysticism or old fashioned botanical, wildlife, or scientific illustration, all of her artwork features meticulously detailed drawings. She works almost exclusively with watercolour and pencil and is interested in subtlety and fine observation.
Laura studied Illustration at Plymouth University followed by an MA at University College Falmouth. Studying authorial illustration has nurtured and expanded the self-directed aspect of her illustration practice and has taught her to develop a strong knowledge of a subject matter that develops within a body of work. Upon completion of her MA Laura was awarded the Graphic Literature Prize by publishing house Atlantic Press and her work was published as a limited run of artist’s books entitled [phantom], this book explores the female body, narrative and pattern making.
Having always been interested in the theoretical and analytical aspects to any visual practice, Laura went on to study for an MRes in Theatre & Performance Studies. Her research question set out to investigate the potential inter-relationships between Illustration, documentation and performance. She developed an on-going portfolio of practice-as-research illustrations that sought to unpick ideas surrounding notions of materiality and the embodied nature of the drawn mark.
is needed now More than ever
The amalgamation and intertwining of these two approaches to illustration has enabled her to create a unique practice that is rooted firmly in developing both technique and concept.
Another area of fascination for Laura is the creation of comics and graphic novels. Through comics she endeavours to develop the playful and narrative aspect to her practice. As well as [phantom] She has had a mini comic published through Fantagraphics as part of an anthology entitled ‘Treasury of Mini Comics Volume 1’ and is currently working on a feature length comic.
