‘From Syria with Love’ comes to Bristol
A collection of artworks by Syrian refugee children is being shown at John Wesley’s Chapel in the heart of Broadmead from Friday April 29 to Sunday May 1.
There will be around 80 prints of drawings and paintings by Syrian children aged between six and 16, currently living in the Al-Abrar refugee camp in Lebanon. Some of the works reflect the trauma that the young people have experienced, while others are more hopeful and optimistic.
The exhibition has been organised jointly by Baraa Ehsaan Kouja from Aleppo, Syria and by Bristol resident Donna King.???
“There is now a lost generation of Syrian children – children who are losing their education, who have been forced to think about war and destruction rather than peace and love,” says Baraa. “These paintings show something of the awful reality that Syrians have endured, but also their dreams.’
Alongside each picture, as well as the title and artist’s name, there will be a photo of the tent the artist occupies at the camp, coupled with a brief statement of that child’s dream.
The exhibition is open on Friday April 29 (3-7pm), Saturday 30 (10am-4pm) and Sunday May 1 (10am-3pm). At 2pm on Saturday and 1pm on Sunday, there will be a talk from event organiser Baraa Ehsaan Kouja, followed by a Q&A session. Entrance is free, though donations are welcomed.
The touring exhibition has already visited several locations including Exeter and London, and has raised more than £9,000 which will go directly back to the refugee camps in Syria and Lebanon.
