Immersive light show coming to Bristol Cathedral

By Mia Vines Booth  Tuesday Aug 29, 2023

A new immersive light show is set to adorn Bristol Cathedral this November.

Luxmuralis: Force of Nature will explore the relationship between religion, mythology and the natural elements of fire, air, earth and water.

The installation is set to transform one of Bristol’s most historical buildings for the second time, after a sell out show last year.

Luxmuralis is an artistic collaboration between award-winning artists: sculptor Peter Walker and composer David Harper.

The pair often work with interesting structures in unexpected spaces to provide visual artwork to public audiences.

The multi-sensory experience will transform the Bristol Cathedral interior into a virtual abstract painting.

The light projections will be accompanied by David Harper’s arrangement which has been specifically composed for this piece in the hopes of creating seamless harmony between the visuals and sound.

Taking viewers on a journey through each individual element, the cathedral will be divided into four sections, each representing a different one.

Frances Rosewell, visitor experience director at Bristol Cathedral, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Luxmuralis team once again, to bring another spectacle to the Cathedral.

“The installation will entirely transform the space, and will use every available inch of our home to create what will inevitably be a show-stopping experience for many.

“We hope that this installation will leave people feeling inspired, in touch with the world around them and inclined to revisit the Cathedral for more exciting projects in the future.”

For accessibility reasons, viewers will be able to attend a Quiet Hour version of the experience. There will also be level access and a hearing loop.

Tickets for the installation will go on sale this Thursday and are available here.
