Josephine Pryde These Are Just Things I Say These Are Not My Opinions

By Lou Trimby  Friday Oct 17, 2014

A major exhibition of British artist Josephine Pryde’s work opens at the Arnolfini on November 21.

Known primarily for her photographic work, Pryde has developed a singular style of image making which recalls methods and ideas used in, amongst others, advertising and fashion photography.

She understands photography is a broad and diverse area where shifts in social attitudes and ideas can be traced. Adopting and layering different elements of the medium, the results are sometimes reminiscent of stock photography – generic images produced and archived for commercial use.

Her pictures also include intimations of doubt which question the very visual language that she simultaneously employs and references – the shimmering surfaces of textiles, portraits of staged personas or photographs of splashing liquids.

The presentation of images is also frequently an important element of the work, an example being photographs mounted onto aluminum tubes, or presented with objects literally breaking through the surface.

For her exhibition at Arnolfini, Josephine Pryde premiers an installation that combines a new three dimensional work with series of photographs picturing hands shot while touching things – things sensitive to touch that respond as consumer technology or as human.

This exhibition promises to be thought provoking as well as aesthetically pleasing and could potentially be one of the art events of the year in Bristol.
