Local wildlife feature in bold new mural
Horfield’s urban wildlife feature prominently in a new mural created by Alex Godwin, AKA Billy Colours, with the help of the community.
The artist was commissioned by the Friends of Horfield Library to paint the vibrant piece on the wall facing the library, with one key aim to “evoke a sense of pride in the area”.
As part of the process, Billy ran workshop sessions in the library and asked members of the community for their input and creative ideas to shape the final mural.
is needed now More than ever
The project was designed to brighten up the neighbourhood, but also to give people opportunity to input into the creative process and improve their local area.

The mural by Horfield Library hopes to evoke a “sense of pride in the area”
The mural was an early idea at the inception of the Friends of Horfield Library in September 2020.
Speaking about the project, the friends group said: “A mural was an obvious way to cheer up the area and draw attention to the library (it’s amazing how many people don’t know the library is there).
“Billy took on board a lot of ideas, made changes to suggested plans in response to these and produced the wonderful artwork completed in less than a week.”
The group also has future plans, which include a replacement for the old chain link fence that, it’s hoped, will include elements that echo the mural.
The finished mural has been described as “a fantastic addition to the street scene”. It was funded by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority’s Love our High Streets project as part of the city centre and high streets recovery and renewal programme.
