Maker of the Month: Scarlet & Nell
This month’s maker is Scarlet & Nell, who are selling luxurious scented candles and diffusers exclusively through Bristol24/7, available to buy from our online shop.
“I’m extremely proud of what Scarlet & Nell has accomplished so far,” says Helen Arthur, who founded the Bristol-based luxurious scented candle and diffuser business, Scarlet & Nell, in 2015. “My dream has always been to unite my passion for scented candles with my love for all things British.”
The beautiful candles and diffusers are fragranced, blended and hand-poured to the highest possible quality standards. Their rich, luxurious fragrances evoke happy memories of special times and places, and all the suppliers are British, with many of them local to Bristol.
is needed now More than ever
The process of making a scented candle take a lot of preparation, Helen explains. “When we have a new scent, there is a lot of testing involved, including burn trials that make sure the scent is perfect and that the candle wax will burn cleanly and evenly.
“Our scented candles are all lovingly blended and poured by hand,” Helen continues. “We use the finest wax, which is gently warmed up as the fragrance is blended in, which gives the scent a lovely even distribution. Even the wick is placed by hand to be totally central, and trimmed neatly one the final pour has been done, for a premium finish.”
Quality and perfection are what Helen constantly strives for. “After one more thorough inspection, each candle is cleaned and hand polished to an immaculate finish. Labels are lovingly applied and then the candle is packaged,” she says.
“The design of our packaging is really important to me. It’s a little bit more on-trend and striking than other brands you might find out there. And each candle and diffuser comes with a unique story, capturing the significance its stunning scent has to the local area.”
For example, “the Bristol Bluebells candles and diffusers capture the scent of the iconic Avon Gorge in spring, when the area is carpeted in stunning perfumed flowers,” she explains, “while Bath Roman Roses recalls the fabulous fragranced oils used historically in the famous Spa”.
Helen came to Bristol 30 years ago for work, and has settled in Redland. “It’s just so vibrant,” Helen says. “I live near Gloucester Road and Cheltenham Road, so all the street art is part of what I see on a daily basis.”
She juggles family life with a consultancy role, as well as running Scarlet & Nell. Much of her work is inspired by what she finds in Bristol, and she hopes to continue creating scents that capture something of Great Britain, and help to evoke happy memories of the nation.
Profits of the sales of Scarlett & Nell candles and diffusers will be donated to Alzheimer’s Research, who are committed to beating dementia through research. Helen’s father has dementia, so it’s a very personal choice and an excellent cause.
