New Stokes Croft mural ‘a celebration of unity in diversity’
The finishing touches are being put to a huge mural on the side of a church in Stokes Croft.
The 30ft-long mural on one wall of E5 Church has taken parishioners two months to paint, with just a butterfly remaining to complete at one end of Hillgrove Street.
More than 20 people of all ages and backgrounds have helped paint the piece, known as Metamorphosis, which aims to add “a positive, colourful, hope-filled vibe to the area”.

The wall of multicoloured gemstones represents the diversity of the Jamaica Street church and the world’s uniqueness, with the butterfly symbolising metamorphosis and rebirth.

“Covid-19 has been like a cocoon for many,” the mural’s designer, Emma Holloway, told The Good News Post. “It’s a message of hope that out of something seemingly negative can come something beautiful.
“Its themes are hope, restoration and transformation and in essence, connects to a bigger picture of what’s happening in Bristol.”

Emma added: “The wall of connected multi-coloured, multi-faceted gemstones represent unity in diversity, as both an embodiment of humanity, of the local community and of the spiritual community that commissioned it.
“It is a big mix of cultures, races, ages, social classes and walks of life.”
