Preview: BV Studios: Open Studios 2017

By Steve Wright  Monday Apr 17, 2017

Hidden away in the industrial heart of Bedminster, BV Studios is a mysterious building with blank, enigmatic walls. It lies along almost the whole length of Philip Street, opposite Windmill Hill City Farm, and gives no clue as to its purpose.

Over the weekend of April 22-23, however, its secrets are revealed as the resident artists throw open their studio doors for BV’s annual Open Studios.

“Bristol is full of artists and creative people and BV Studios was established at the beginning of 2010 specifically to offer them affordable and secure studio space in which to work,” explains Studio Manager Penny Jones. “There are over 125 artists and creatives working in the building and this will be our seventh Open Studios. We are very proud of the huge variety and quality of the work produced here, and this is the public’s annual chance to see it.”

“We have painters, sculptors, ceramicists, textile artists and weavers, film-makers and digital artists, animators, writers, performers and installation artists. We have Hackspace, a place to make interesting things… we even have a pole-dancing studio!”

An opening party on the evening of Friday 21 will feature a bar, food, live music, DJ and dancing: over the weekend, a cafe will be serving home-made cakes, coffee, baguettes, soups and curries.

“Each artist has their own space and each is completely different and exciting,” Penny continues. “Ranging from artists not long graduated to artists with more established careers, we guarantee that their work will both surprise and delight you, stimulate and inspire you, intrigue and puzzle you. It will sometimes startle you or make you laugh – but it will always make you think.”
