Video: Prostitution, corruption & destitution
This May the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery’s exhibition of the work of William Hogarth officially opens.
The exhibition will feature Tate Britain’s entire collection of paintings by Hogarth and will be the most fully realised showcase of this important artist ever to occur in the South West.
is needed now More than ever
Hogarth is primarily known for his biting satirical prints such as ‘Gin Lane’ and highly politicized cartoon, some of which will be on display from Bristol Museum’s permanent collection. However he was also an acclaimed portraitist, engraver and printmaker.
Fine art curator Jenny Gaschke takes us on a video tour of the exhibition featuring his racy prints including the Rake’s Progress and The Harlot’s Progress and some his lesser know portraits.
One of the iconic works on show is Hogarth’s self-portrait and Jenny Gaschke talks us through the symbolism and significant of one of his most important paintings.
Other events that will run alongside the exhibition include a series of talks, gallery tours and The Bad Taste of the Town – an evening of entertainment inspired by 18th century life.
The exhibition runs from May 16 – August 31
