Return of RWA’s Secret Postcard Auction

By Ellie Pipe  Friday May 29, 2020

A unique event that has fast become a staple of the art-lovers calendar returns to Bristol in a different format for 2020.

Featuring more than 300 mini artworks from some renowned names in the art world and beyond, the RWA’s Secret Postcard Auction offers collectors and first-time buyers the chance to purchase original pieces from as little as £40.

Some of the famous names involved in this year’s online version of the event include Aardman’s Nick Park, Luke Jerram, Susie Hamilton, Dame Joan Collins and Timothy Spall.

Each have anonymously submitted a piece and prospective buyers can submit bids from a minimum of £40, with an opportunity to purchase an original piece of art for a fraction of its true value.

Bidding takes place from June 15 – 25. All artworks measure 19 x 14 cm and are signed on the back, so buyers either have to guess who the big-name artists are or just buy what they like.

The Royal West of England Academy (RWA) is an independent charity that relies on the auction as a vital contributor to its finances. Last year, the event raised £30,000.

With the art gallery’s Queen’s Road building closed due to lockdown restrictions, the auction has moved online for this year and people are invited to get bidding from the comfort of their own home.
