Sadie Catt photographic exhibition ‘Beekeeper’ to open at SERCHIA Gallery

By Sarski Anderson  Monday Sep 12, 2022

In 2021, curator and art director Christine Serchia made the decision to open a not-for-profit art gallery in her Redland home.

The results, SERCHIA, were hailed by The British Journal of Photography as “a new and ambitious gallery showing exquisite work by contemporary practitioners”.

The latest exhibition to be staged at the gallery is from Bristol photographer and educator Sadie Catt, with her collection Beekeeper. The photos are a visual metaphor of the artist navigating the reestablishment of her relationship with men, as a survivor of sexual assault.

‘Smoker’

Catt is an associate lecturer in photography at Bath Spa University who has previously exhibited at The National Portrait Gallery as part of the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize, as well as Side Gallery, Photo North and the Noorderlicht International Photography Festival.

These photos were produced “in an attempt to reflect upon fear, threat and trust in a manner which is safe and accessible”. For Catt, making the work “consolidated the continuation of life, new experience and growth”.

‘Hive’

‘Fist’

In her own journey to healing, she turned to The Green House in Bristol, a charity offering free specialist counselling to help people affected by sexual abuse and rape.

Beekeeper will raise funding and awareness for the charity, and visitors to the gallery in person, via the website, or social media will have the option to make a donation.
