Serchia Gallery hosts solstice-inspired exhibition from Chinese-British artist Dori Deng
Based in Bath, the Chinese-British artist Dori Deng works mainly in the medium of projected light.
“I am particularly interested in time-based elements that function as ‘activation’ in reading the architectural space, to provoke a different way of seeing,” she says.
Her experimental way of working has led to inventive collaborations with contemporary musicians and composers, including the film soundtrack artist Mica Levi and Laurence Crane.
is needed now More than ever
She was also commissioned by Opera Grand Avignon to collaborate with composer Josephine Stephenson in the making of the light and stage design for Three Lunar Seas, which premiered in Avignon in May 2023.
In their final exhibition of the year, SERCHIA Gallery are showing the second part of Deng’s solo show, created during her artist residency at the space.
Sun + Shadow is inspired by the solstice; Shadow in deference to summer, and Sun celebrating winter. The title references the seminal book by modern architect Marcel Breuer, whose work harnessed industrial materials like glass and steel in the creation of buildings with voluminous space and light.
“Light has physical structure and duration,” reflects Deng. “To visualise these proper ties of light I draw connections between architectural spaces and our movements within, our memory beyond.”
Dori Deng: Sun + Shadow is at SERCHIA Gallery from December 2-22, Monday-Friday 10am-5pm (free, by appointment).
