St Paul’s attacked by giant octopus

By Bristol24/7  Friday Oct 28, 2016

Octopus tentacles burst out the windows above a barber shop in St Paul’s, lending a B-movie-style makeover to Sussex Place.

The ‘Octopied St Paul’s’ instillation was put together by Bristol street art duo Filthy Luker and Pedro Estrellas who have taken their tentacles around the globe.

“It’s great to get the chance to show off our newest piece in our home town,” Filthy said. “We’ve traveled the world on the back of a tentacle for a few years now but we rarely get a chance to exhibit in Bristol.”

“I was brought up in this area and my workshop is within spitting distance so I leap at any chance to play to my home crowd, and it save’s on petrol too. It’s a beautiful building and in a very prominent spot. The new tentacles are now in really bright colours with yellow suckers all over them. It’s going to look great.”

The installation has the support of Imagine St Pauls – a partnership project between Sustrans and the police with the aim of improving the area and its reputation.

Georgie Burr, from Sustrans, said: “Its great to bring some silly and positive energy to Sussex place – it’s the gateway to the city.”

Local PCSO Jackie Harper, part of the St Paul’s neighbourhood team, said: “This junction was a real hotspot for drug dealing until I managed to secure a less exciting – but very effective – installation opposite: CCTV. It’s an iconic building in St Paul’s and the owner and businesses have worked hard to make real improvements here.”
