Stokes Croft’s counterculture celebrated in new exhibition

By Mia Vines Booth  Wednesday Sep 28, 2022

Stokes Croft has been the centre for many of the political battles that have defined Bristol’s recent history, a hotspot for gentrification and its political opposition.

It’s also a centre for culture and creativity, hosting many of Bristol’s most popular clubs, arts spaces, and gig venues.

For the past 15 years, staff and volunteers at the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft have been collecting and storing different pieces of visual culture that pass through the area, scurrying them away in boxes for safe keeping.

Much of the material has remained transient and ephemeral, existing only for a short time before disappearing. However over the last four months, a small team of staff and volunteers at PRSC have been quietly collecting and storing this material, curating, cataloguing and digitising.

Now for the first time, this material is emerging into the light in a new exhibition.

The Stokes Croft Archive is a trip through Stokes Croft’s history, told through the objects that people normally cast aside.

The exhibition will take viewers on a journey to explore the constantly changing collage of visual ephemera.

From gig posters and protest banners, to meeting notes and drawings, the exhibition charts the major political struggles that have defined Stokes Croft in the past 20 years through a curated selection of objects from the archive.

Stokes Croft Archive Exhibition will be held at The PRSC Space on Jamaica Street, and will run from Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 2, with an opening night on Friday with live music from Natalie Whiteland, Tom Connolly and more.
