The St Andrew’s artist creating animated worlds in his bedroom
“When I first started to try and make ‘art’, it looked too much like ‘art’ and I wasn’t making what I really wanted to make,” says animator Alfie Dwyer.
“I soon learned to let go and make whatever I wanted, and people can call it art or not if they like.”
Alfie, who lives in St Andrew’s, is a multimedia artist. He’s most recently worked with indie rockstar Declan McKenna and Adult Swim.
is needed now More than ever
“I moved to Bristol because I wanted to be surrounded by arts and music,” says the 25-year-old, whose works focuses on the human body, the digital world and dark comedy. “When I moved here, I had no idea about Bristol’s history with animation. That quickly changed after every other person I met here was an animator!
“It feels amazing to be surrounded by so many creative and open people.”
Alfie started animating two years ago, saying he “I knew immediately I was going to get obsessed” after experimenting previously with video art.
The artist has created music videos, been commissioned for The Eric Andre Show and has been featured by arts magazine It’s Nice That.
“I was lucky enough to move in with Grandma’s House, an emerging three-piece queer female punk band, and was quickly introduced to Bristol’s punk and gig life,” Alfie adds.
He is now making a music video for the band using his same dark comedic style, which has been compared to the animation in The Sims 2 – something which Alfie takes as a compliment.
Still a relatively fresh face on the Bristol scene, Alfie has been supported by Rising Arts Agency during his time in the city.
The community for young creatives has helped the artist find community and forge connections in a particularly difficult time. He is now a board member at the organisation.
For Alfie, 2021 began with a place on Rife’s 30 under 30 list, cementing him as an influential force in the city. Alfie’s plans for the rest of the year are to direct a music video, to keep making personal work and to sleep more.
