Touring exhibition of self discovery aims to improve mental health

By Sarski Anderson  Tuesday Nov 1, 2022

Inspired by Sikh teachings, a travelling exhibition from arts organisation Without Shape Without Form comes to Arnolfini on November 5, encouraging visitors to go on a journey of self discovery.

Called Journey of The Mind, the experience is intended to help people to think more about their own mental health, and to overcome the perceived cultural, racial and religious barriers between ‘us’, ‘them’ and ‘all’ by highlighting the commonality of the human mind.

Reflecting the need to bridge the gaps left by social injustice, loneliness and poor health, particularly as we emerge from COVID-19, the exhibition asks ‘what is the medicine that can heal the mind?’

“We believe that now more than ever, mental wellness is key to healing and understanding oneself and the world,” says curator Deep Kailey.

“‘The mind’ is something we all have in common, regardless of age, race, gender, creed, or social background. Visitors will gain an invaluable understanding of Sikhi – and the peace that comes with its practices.”

The collection platforms the stories of some highly spiritual people. Featured works include figurative drawings and digitally created paintings by internationally renowned Sikh artist, Kanwar Singh, as well as short films by British animator Christian Wood.

Running in tandem with the exhibition, a series of free events, including talks and performances, are being curated by the organisers with the aim of bringing visitors together in a calm, compassionate and positive space.

“We hope everyone is able to take something away from this thought-provoking exhibition,” says Gary Topp, executive director at Arnolfini, “and most of all, enjoy themselves.”

Journey of the Mind is at Arnolfini from November 5-December 4. The exhibition is free to attend, and open 11am-6pm, Tuesday-Sunday. More information is available at www.withoutshapewithoutform.com, and www.arnolfini.org.uk.
