Unwind with calligraphy workshops, coming soon

By Steve Wright  Tuesday Dec 17, 2019

In today’s fast-paced and sometimes stressful world, many people are turning to creative hobbies to try and relax and unwind from their busy schedules. With Mental Health Foundation research showing that 74% of the UK feel “overwhelmed or unable to cope,” a creative interest is increasingly seen as a way through the stresses and strains. One such is calligraphy, “the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner”.

“The great thing about modern calligraphy is how calming it is,” says Kirsten Burke, co-founder of The Modern Calligraphy Co. and the UK’s leading modern calligrapher. “Spending a few hours focusing on one task can really quieten down all the buzzing in your head.”

On Tuesday, February 11 2020, The Modern Calligraphy Co. are bringing their unique brand of modern calligraphy workshops to Bristol for the first time. They’ll be at HOURS events space in Colston Yard, with two other days (March 26 and April 21) already taking bookings.

Research reveals that “calligraphy can combat anxiety, improve wellbeing and boost self-esteem”

“We’re passionate about introducing calligraphy to new audiences, and Bristol has always been close to my heart since I trained at Bower Ashton,” Kirsten explains. “We want people to know how fun and accessible it can be for a complete beginner, if they have the right tutor, tools, and worksheets that are fun and easy to follow. When they book with us, they know they’re going to get great, reliable content from a nationally recognised brand.”

In May 2019, The Modern Calligraphy company were commissioned by The Daily Mail to create a 16 page Mindful Calligraphy supplement that was given out to over one million readers. Research by the BBC and University College London reveals that “calligraphy can combat anxiety, improve wellbeing and boost self-esteem” and that 76 per cent of people found calligraphy to be a ‘distraction tool’.

“It’s great to come away from a relaxing and enjoyable activity with something lovely to show for it too, and we love seeing our students happy with the cards and artworks they’ve created with the help of our templates,” Kirsten continues. “Calligraphy can really make a big difference to peoples’ everyday lives and is perfect for all ages. It doesn’t matter if your handwriting is messy or you don’t have an arty bone in your body.”

Jill Hembling, co-founder and Business Manager, says “we’ve spent years perfecting our workshop structure so that our students can make the most of their time spent with us, and learn as much as possible in a calm, relaxing environment. Our worksheets, guides and templates are all original and designed in-house, and our students get to take them all home so that they can work over them again and again.”

The Modern Calligraphy Co. will host calligraphy workshops at HOURS, 10 Colston Yard, BS1 5BD on Feb 11, March 26 and April 21. For more info and to book, visit www.themoderncalligraphyco.com/bristol-workshops
