Vibrant new mural celebrates local community
Much-loved local legends have been immortalised in a vibrant new mural that celebrates the St Paul’s community.
Street artist HazardOne, aka Harriet Wood, worked in collaboration with residents on the artwork created on Ashley Court as part of a project that was initially launched as a solution to persistent tagging.
Mark Daley (main photo) was among those at the site at the weekend where a mural of his dad, Israel Augustus Daley, who was known locally as Gullu, now takes pride of place. A portrait depicting dinner lady Jestina Sharpe is also due to be completed this week.

Speaking about the project, HazardOne, who was involved in the mural of DJ Derek in Eastville among other pieces, said: “I’m super excited to be a part of this project – creating artwork that represents and belongs to the community while brightening up the street. Street art is one of the most effective ways of transforming dull walls and simultaneously communicating the lives and stories of local residents.”

Street artist Silent Hobo also worked on a second mural at Catherine Court. Both murals have been paid for by Sovereign Housing Association, which manages the buildings.
There are plans to create a mural of the late Gilbert “Ajax” Watson, with a location and details of this yet to be confirmed.

Henry Palmer, community development officer for Sovereign Housing said the idea was to celebrate the multi-cultural area and people. “Bright colours, flowers, water, animals and icons that represent the history of St Paul’s will also be woven in with Hazard’s trademark skill,” he added.
