50 artists contribute to The Bristol and Bath Art Book

By Sarski Anderson  Friday Jul 29, 2022

Emma Bennett is a commercial paper artist, and creator of the successful City Art Books series.

Her vision is to show each city “through the eyes of the artists it inspires”, and to do so in a diverse array of styles and media.

The sixth book in the collection has now been published, featuring a host of familiar, and not so familiar haunts in Bristol and Bath.

As with the other titles in the series, it includes an illustrated map of both cities, to encourage readers to explore on foot and look through the artists’ eyes as they digest each view on paper, and also in the real world.

For Bristol’s own Stephen Merchant, reading it is “like being given a brilliant new set of eyes. Seeing the familiar afresh”.

The 50 local artists featured include Abigail McDougall, Amy Hutchings, Donna Bradley, Emy Lou Holmes, Clare Phillips, Juli-Anne Coward, Andrew Davies-Coward, Anna Duckworth, Emmeline Simpson, Hannah Broadway, Mike Rome, Nick Gerolemou, Katharine Dove, Valerie Pirlot, Jenny Urquhart and also Lisa Malyon, who shared her thoughts about where creative inspiration arises when thinking about her local cities.

“As an artist,” she reflects, “Bristol and Bath have a wealth of architectural styles, structure and landmarks that inspire my art, specifically the maritime history around Bristol’s Docks and the endless Georgian architecture in Bath.

“The bridges in Bristol regularly inspire me to get out my sketchbook or paints. I enjoy cycling from Bristol to Bath on the cycle path; it’s the perfect way to approach the city.”
