Feted YA author Angie Thomas coming to Watershed
Bristol young people’s magazine Rife has teamed up with Waterstones to bring the author of one of the year’s most talked-about publications to Bristol.
US author Angie Thomas’ debut Young Adult novel The Hate U Give (£7.99, Walker Books) was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. It is the powerful story of 16-year-old Starr, who navigates the two contrasting worlds of her poor inner-city neighbourhood where she was born and raised, and the wealthy suburbs where she goes to school.
This delicate balance is destroyed when she is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend Khalil by a white police officer. Starr’s quest for truth and justice not only puts her life in jeopardy, but also threatens her family and the community in which she lives.

Film rights for The Hate U Give have been optioned by Fox 2000, with George Tillman in line to direct and Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg set to star.
The book has had an enthusiastic reception. Publisher’s Weekly calls it “heartbreakingly topical”, while bestselling writer John Green labels it a “stunning, brilliant, gut-wrenching novel that will be remembered as a classic of our time.”
The Bristol event will be at Watershed, where Thomas will be in conversation with Rife editor Nikesh Shukla, who says of the book: “The Hate U Give is going to be one of the most important books of 2017, no hyperbole, just facts.” Booking in advance is recommended.
Angie Thomas will be in conversation with Nikesh Shukla on Sunday, April 9 at Watershed from 6pm. Tickets are available from www.waterstones.com/events/meet-angie-thomas-author-of-the-hate-u-give/bristol-galleries
