Bookhaus to host launch for Lauren Elkin’s ‘Art Monsters’

By Sarski Anderson  Friday Jul 21, 2023

Lauren Elkin is a writer and translator of books on art, culture and feminism whose work has been translated into multiple languages.

Esteemed British playwright and novelist Deborah Levy called her “one of our most valuable critical thinkers – the Susan Sontag of her generation”.

Her current writing projects include a biography of the American novelist Gertrude Stein, and a novel, Scaffolding, to be published in 2024.

On July 20, her new book Art Monsters will be released in the UK (published by Chatto & Windus) – and it is set for a Bristol launch event at Bookhaus on July 31.

“For decades,” say the illustrative notes, “feminist artists have confronted the problem of how to tell the truth about their experience as bodies.

“Queer bodies, sick bodies, racialised bodies, female bodies, what is their language, what are the materials we need to transcribe it?

“Exploring the ways in which feminist artists have taken up this challenge, Art Monsters is a landmark intervention in how we think about art and the body, calling attention to a radical heritage of feminist work that not only reacts against patriarchy but redefines its own aesthetic aims.”

On the night, Elkin will be joined in conversation with the head of exhibitions at Arnolfini, Gemma Brace.

Art Monsters: Unruly Bodies in Feminist Art by Lauren Elkin is out now, published by Chatto & Windus. There is a launch event at Bookhaus Bristol on July 31 from 6-8pm; tickets are available from www.bookhausbristol.com, where you can also view all upcoming literary events at the store.
