Bristol poet pens a love letter to local pubs
In a bid to bring some cheer during England’s third lockdown, the Inn Crowd has commissioned poets to share heartwarming poets about local pubs.
Bristol poet Malaika Keogde has penned a piece to help bring some hope to publicans, their staff and their communities in South West.
The national Winter Warmers project is being organised by Pub is The Hub and the Inn Crowd and sees poets in six regions write a message of love to their local pubs.
is needed now More than ever
Despite their pubs being currently closed, publicans across the South West are spreading some cheer through the Winter Warmers campaign by sharing Kegode’s poem, The Best Ones, on social media and on posters outside their pubs and putting postcards with the poem written on in customers’ takeaway bags, food boxes and through the doors of people who may be struggling.
“My poem tries to capture the feeling of sinking comfortably into a pub sofa with good friends. It is about connection – connection to people, to place and to feeling,” says Malaika.
The poet, who has been published by Burning Eye Books and has performed at the Bristol Old Vic, adds: “I hope it reminds people of those nights with special people in their favourite, secret pub and pulls them back into those places as soon as they can.”
The Winter Warmers campaign is a way for pubs and the arts, which are among the sectors most detrimentally impacted by the pandemic, join forces in a positive collaboration to bring positivity and hope during a difficult time.
