Bristol publisher launches book sharing project

By Joe Melia  Thursday Jan 25, 2018

Bristol children’s publisher, Book Island, will be launching a book sharing initiative, The Green Satchel Project, on International Book Giving Day, February 14th.

Families are invited to apply to be the recipients of a green satchel filled with eight Book Island picture books and a small hand-made book diary. The family will get to keep the books for two weeks, and then choose the next family to whom the satchel will be sent.

Participating families can be based anywhere in Bristol; Greet Pauwelijn, who runs Book Island, wants the satchel to travel as much as possible across the city.

As Greet explains, the idea for the project has developed over the last few years and its origins lie in a similar initiative which began during the publisher’s early days in New Zealand:

“Back in 2013, when we released our first three titles, I labelled one copy of each picture book with a Bookcrossing label and released them in Wellington, New Zealand. I was really curious to see the journey each of these books would go on and was hoping they’d go from North to South Island and perhaps even leave NZ. Soon I found out that the three children who had found the books were heartbroken when they learnt that they were not allowed to keep them. I then realised that Bookcrossing would never work for us and told the families they could keep the books.

“When we arrived in Bristol in 2016, I decided to reignite the BookCrossing idea and use it for a community project in Bristol, using the green satchel which I brought with me from NZ. This time I wanted to make sure that the books would be passed on to other families, so that as many children as possible could have access to the satchel. The diary that comes with it allows everyone participating in the project to read where the satchel has been before and what those families have written down about the books.”

Those interested in being the first family to receive the Green Satchel are invited to email Book Island [email protected] by February 8th, with a reason why they would like to have the satchel for two weeks. The satchel’s progress can be followed on Facebook, and the books can be purchased at many independent bookshops across Bristol.
