A Bristol-born author’s work will be adapted for the screen by big Hollywood names, including Paul Shapiro and Greg Silverman.
Shapiro, whose credits include The X-Files and Supernatural, and Silverman, who produced The LEGO Movie 2 and 10 Things I Hate About You, are part of the team adapting the work of Gareth L. Powell, who was born in Clifton and now lives in north Somerset.
Powell’s sci-fi trilogy Embers of War will be adapted to a TV show by US production companies Stampede Ventures and wiip.

Breck Eisner will direct and Gary Graham is writing the screenplay. Both will also executive produce along with Greg Silverman and Paul Shapiro, with Powell as co-executive producer.
“I’m very proud of the books and fond of the characters, but an adaptation like this is a dream for many writers, and not one most of us expect to come true,” says Powell.
“I still can’t quite believe it. I guess the reality of it all has yet to sink in for me.”

Embers of War was published in 2018, with the second instalment, Fleet of Knives, released in 2019 and Light of Impossible Stars, the third novel, came out in 2020. The trilogy tells the story of the Trouble Dog, a sentient warship that was one part of a military fleet ordered to commit genocide on a forest planet.
The ship goes rogue and joins The House of Reclamation, a humanitarian fleet that’s devoted itself to helping those in need throughout space and the group’s discovery of a deeper tale that could change the balance of power in the galaxy.
Powell says that he “can’t wait to see it brought to life”.
“I really love it,” the author adds. “I’m just happy to see my work being shared with a new audience.”
