John Hegley to headline Milk Poetry Festival

By Joe Melia  Thursday Apr 26, 2018

One of Bristol’s most popular poetry and spoken word nights, Milk Poetry, is hosting a three-event festival next month.

Opening at Tobacco Factory Theatres on May 20, the festival will feature headliners John Hegley, Joelle Taylor and Maria Ferguson, supported by a selection of Bristol’s brightest rising stars.

Milk Poetry is a major contributor to the rising reputation of the city’s poetry scene, and has been acknowledged as one of the “best spoken word nights in the UK” by prestigious poetry publisher, Picador Books.

Malaika Kegode, Director of Milk Poetry says: “Milk Poetry has gone from strength to strength since first being poured in 2015. We’ve become established as a curator of community-led events celebrating everything that poetry and spoken word can be.

“Our aim has always been to nurture talent and create opportunities for emerging local artists to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with household names in spoken word like John Hegley and Joelle Taylor. That’s why we’re beyond excited to bring this phenomenal line-up to Bristol’s stages in May, featuring some of the originators of Performance Poetry as we know it.”

Kicking off in The Tobacco Factory’s fully-accessible, atmospheric theatre, the festival will spend its second and third evenings at Cotham’s cosy off-beat theatre, The Room Above.
