Lillian Delevoryas – Visual Contemplations

By Ally Coles  Wednesday Nov 18, 2015

Local Bristol artist Lillian Delevoryas is about to launch her first book Visual Contemplations. This book is an innovative, unique series of original paintings exploring the journey of the soul, expanding on early wisdom tradition and religious history.

Delevoryas was inspired by the work of St. Gregory, the bishop of Nyssa in his book The Life of Moses. Gregory explores the historical, theological and philosophical journey from ‘slavery to freedom’, drawing on the story of Moses as a metaphor for this journey. Deeply inspired and affected by the works, and with a previous creative exploration in iconography, Lillian created these paintings as a spontaneous emotional response to Gregory’s insight, and words ‘the knowledge that gives life’. Lillian’s aim is to bring to life the inner meaning of the text through a pictoria, and theorise on the narrative of the pictures.

Lilian Delevoryas’ career spans six decades, with exhibitions all over the world. This new work is an interesting, unique stage in her career. Coming from a purely artistic background, she brings an original, honest, insight to this subject.
