New podcast showcases Bristol’s creatives of colour

By Joe Melia  Wednesday Mar 27, 2019

A new podcast series, In Conversation, has been launched by Bristol-based Words of Colour Productions, to showcase the city’s creatives of colour.

The 30-minute podcast, released every month, features creatives of colour in Bristol discussing their practice, the challenges they face, their achievements, and how they navigate the creative industry’s uneven landscape where inclusion is concerned.

The first three episodes, which are available online, feature award-winning poet and filmmaker Shagufta K Iqbal (main picture) discussing Kiota (a new collective for performers of colour in Bristol), Eclispe Theatre’s acclaimed artistic director Dawn Walton, and playwright Chinonyerem Odimba discussing Princess and the Hustler, her brilliantly received new play about the Bristol Bus Boycott.

Future guests include poet, Lawrence Hoo, and innovative publisher at No Bindings, Lily Green.

Heather Marks who hosts In Conversation, and is Words of Colour’s content and events coordinator for Bristol, says of the podcast:

“Bristol is a hub of creativity and it’s important to recognise the people of colour who are also part of that eco system. The podcast is an opportunity to learn about them and their craft, and to be inspired and understand the realities they face as artists, from their perspective.

“During each episode, I learn something new and unexpected from each of my guests and I hope that’s the same for our listeners. These brilliant practitioners speak candidly about navigating an industry where they are often outliers with no roadmap, and share their insights into what will lead to a better and more inclusive creative ecology. As a creative myself and a person of colour, that’s invaluable.”

Words of Colour Productions is a creative communications agency that promotes, facilitates and develops writers of colour of all genres, collaborating with arts and creative industries with the aim of increasing cultural inclusion.

Yassmin Abdel-Magied will be guest speaker at a live In Conversation event at Waterstones in May 2019

The new podcast is part of an increasing range of activities from Words of Colour, following their expansion into Bristol last year. In May, there will be a live In Conversation event at Waterstones, Bristol Galleries, with award-winning writer and broadcaster, Yassmin Abdel-Magied, who will discuss her work and sign copies of her debut young adult novel, You Must Be Layla.

Words of Colour executive director, Joy Francis, says: “It is an exciting time to be in Bristol, to learn from its rich history and collaborate with its talented artists. We are forging exciting partnerships and will be launching a new professional development programme in the autumn, inspired by wellbeing and entrepreneurship.”
