Poetry collection is raising funds for a Bristol charity
Bristol resident, Maggie Rigg, has written and published a collection of poetry, Spillweir, to raise awareness about Cerebral Palsy (CP).
The poems, based on the experiences of Maggie’s eleven-year-old grandson and his family, provide a glimpse into the life of a child with Cerebral Palsy. They look at the barriers encountered by people with CP, the thoughts and feelings of family members and how society often perceives and treats disability. The poems also mark celebratory occasions.
In the run up to World Cerebral Palsy Day on October 6 Maggie is offering to visit any group or organisation who would like to find out more about Cerebral Palsy and hear poems from the collection.
is needed now More than ever
Maggie has used her own money to publish Spillweir. Sales of the book will raise funds for Cerebral Palsy Plus, a charity based in Bristol which supports over 300 people with Cerebral Palsy and their families.
Maggie, who is former Chair of Cerebral Palsy Plus, explains the book’s title: “A Spillweir is the emergency outlet that prevents overfills of water in canals and other waterways. I called the book Spillweir as I use this term as a metaphor for the overspill of emotions”
Cathy Truman, Development Co-ordinator at Cerebral Palsy Plus says: “I really loved reading the book and smiled after reading When my daughter was away as I remember the occasion well, especially Maggie’s mild, controlled panic as her grandson sailed off without her into the sunset. Some of the poems are really moving and made me cry.”
Anyone wishing to book a talk by Maggie or purchase a copy of Spillweir should contact 0117 965 5028 or email office@cerebralpalsyplus.org.uk. For more information on Bristol charity Cerebral Palsy Plus, visit www.cerebralpalsyplus.org.uk
