The Bristol Short Story Prize shortlist

By Joanna Papageorgiou  Wednesday Aug 5, 2015

The shortlist for the 2015 Bristol Short Story Prize is now out with the final 20 stories on the list to be published in the 8th Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology. All shortlisted authors are in the running for the £1,000 first prize. The list features a number of writers from the UK, three from Canada and others based in Australia, South Africa, Romania and France.

The 20 stories were selected from a longlist of 40 by a judging panel which was chaired by former BBC Radio 4 producer, Sara Davies. The other judges are literary agent, Rowan Lawton; writer and broadcaster, Sanjida O’Connell; and writer, journalist and performer, Nikesh Shukla.

“One of the biggest pleasures in reading the longlist,” says Sara Davies, “was the global spread of the entries: stories had come in from all over the English-speaking world, and their subjects ranged from the small and seemingly domestic to the big issues around political upheaval, immigration and war. There was much to admire, and much to enjoy, and we deliberated long and hard about which twenty we felt should go forward. We looked for those stories that stayed with us after reading, that we could return to with pleasure, and that rewarded close attention. We were really excited to find such a range of storytelling talent.”
