The Confectioner’s Tale by Laura Madeleine
If you like Paris and the belle époque, pastries, love and a mystery, The Confectioner’s Tale by Bristol-based writer Laura Madeleine will make an ideal read.
Madeleine’s novel is a historical romance split between two ages. In 1988, a Ph.D student falling behind in her studies sets out to find out the mystery of a postcard of her grandfather’s, before the latter’s biographer exposes scandalous secrets. In 1909 Paris, meanwhile, a forbidden love affair begins. The book alternates chapters from Guillerme in Paris and Padra in Cambridge.
The idea for the story came to Madeleine when, on a trip to Bordeaux, she came across the small French custard pastries cannelés – and discovered their fascinating 300-year history of rivalry and craftsmanship.
