The Yard: Building a Community
At the end of Mina Road in St Werburgh’s is one of Bristol’s most remarkable communities.
Now a new book tells the story of the self-build sustainable development where some houses wouldn’t look out of place in Gaudi’s Barcelona or Tolkien’s Hobbiton.
Tangent Books has teamed up with Bristol photo-journalist Carrie Hitchcock to publish The Yard: Building A Community.
is needed now More than ever
Carrie is one of the group of people who built their houses here and in the book she tells the story of how a piece of concrete-covered industrial land became a thriving community.
Tangent Books publisher Richard Jones said: “More than simply a record of the project, the book aims to inspire and inform others who want to study or create similar developments themselves.
“It incorporates practical tips and resources, and provides case studies giving an insight into the person or family who created each house.
“The book explores ideas of community, self-determination and the creative potential of resistance.”
