Action on Poverty presents inaugural comedy fundraiser for East and West Africa

By Sarski Anderson  Wednesday Mar 29, 2023

Bristol-based international development charity Action on Poverty have announced their first comedy fundraiser, taking place at The Alma Tavern & Theatre on April 25.

100 per cent of funds raised will be going to help support marginalised people living in extreme poverty in East and West Africa, where the charity’s work is concentrated.

To date, their grassroots approach has enabled 296,313 people to build sustainable livelihoods, and supported over 600 local organisations in increasing their incomes, accessing better services and influencing wider change.

One such participant is 17 year old Sandra, who joined an internship project that paired her with local welders, allowing her to create the future opportunities that she once thought would be denied her as a young female.

Action on Poverty is particularly focused on working with local groups to assist the most marginalised people in East and West African society affected by extreme poverty, such as women, young people and people with disabilities.

The comedy night will be hosted by one half of Yorkshire duo, The Lovely Boys – a.k.a. Mikey Bligh-Smith.

On the bill are emerging local acts Millie Malone and Greg the ‘diagram comic’ Curzon, alongside Alice-India Garwood, who took her show Be Brave (Or Whatever) to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022.

The night will also include a raffle, and plenty of opportunities to get involved with future fundraising for the charity.
