It’s been a fine year for the formerly Bristol-based comic, who shared the Edinburgh Comedy Awards prize for his new show The Darkness of Robins. Possibly also the first comic to quote German polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe at an awards ceremony.

2. Bristol Comedy Garden, Queen Square
June 14-18
Ross Noble, Greg Davies, Adam Hills, Nina Conti, Mark Watson (pictured), Sara Pascoe, Rich Hall, Aisling Bea, Marcus Brigstocke et al were all on top form; the bars and street-food stalls buzzed with life. Another vintage Bristol Comedy Garden.
3. Bubble Comedy, Grain Barge

This stand-up / open-mic night aboard the Grain Barge has been consistently pulling in some fine comics to headline its sessions. Jordan Brookes, Fin Taylor, Gein’s Family Giftshop and Liam Pickford have been among the fast-rising names stepping on board.
4. Chubby White’s Variety Night, Bristol Improv Theatre

Themed around a mythical 1970s entertainer, this nicely surreal and ill-assorted night of stand-up, sketch comedy and general oddballery has won itself a devoted following.
5. Chuckle Busters, Wardrobe Theatre
Fortnightly
Comedy promoters Chuckle Busters continue to lure some of the most exciting circuit comedians to Old Market. Bisha K Ali (above), Mark Watson, Fern Brady, James Acaster and Nish Kumar have been among the recent high-profile visitors.
