Fight Blue Monday with comics and free beer
Relief is at hand from today’s annual perfect storm of windswept, post-festive, debt-ridden, resolutions-broken misery, Blue Monday – courtesy of a clutch of local comics and Wiltshire’s Box Steam Brewery.
The award-winning independent brewery, based at Holt near Bradford-on-Avon, is hosting a pop-up comedy festival in the city centre this evening. Featuring free beer and performances from nine local up-and-coming comics, the festival aims to cheer up Bristol’s workers as they trudge home from work through the winter gloom.
The brewery has enlisted the help of local promoter Bubble Comedy to serve up a bevy of laughs. At 5.30pm three Box Steam Brewery comedy tents will materialise at three locations across the city centre (locations will be revealed later today at the web links below), with three comedians performing at each location. The Box Steam Brewery team will also be dispensing complimentary halves of its Golden Bolt ale to the needy. Comics performing include Jo Duncan, Chris Chopping, Eliza Fraser and Jamie D’Souza.
Box Steam owner, Andy Roberts, explains: “This time of year is a downer for almost everyone. But we want everyone to down a beer and have a laugh instead. As a brewery, we’re in the business of raising people’s spirits, so we’re answering the call for a little happiness on the streets of Bristol.
“It doesn’t take a mathematician to see why this time of year is depressing. The weather is awful, with very little sunlight, and we’re all struggling with the aftermath of Christmas, in particular heavy stomachs and light wallets. But Box Steam Brewery have the antidote – it’s pretty hard to be miserable when you’re watching great comedy with a free beer in your hand.”
