Matt Lucas raises curtain for Slapstick 2016

By Steve Wright  Friday Oct 9, 2015

Comedian, writer, actor and chart-topping singer Matt Lucas is to return to the city where he spent three years as a student (and found one of his best known characters) to star in a December curtain-raiser for the next Slapstick festival of vintage and visual screen comedy, running from January 21 to 24 next year.

Matt has become one of the UK’s best-loved entertainers since he quit the University of Bristol to form a double act with another Bristol graduate David Walliams (BA, Drama, 1982).

But Friday, December 4 will find him back in sight of the Wills Building, when he presents Matt Lucas’s Banana Skin at St George’s as a lead-in to Slapstick 2016. Now the UK’s biggest festival of screen comedy, Slapstick 2016 will use St George’s for several of the events currently being lined up for the four-day programme.

Festival Director Chris Daniels says: “Matt Lucas is a perfect match for Slapstick.  From Shooting Stars to Come Fly with Me via the extraordinary global success of Little Britain, Matt’s body of work is full of visual comedy and affectionate references to the silent-era films and stars we cherish, especially Chaplin, Keaton and Laurel and Hardy.

“And we’re particularly delighted that the show is happening at gorgeous St George’s – last used by the festival for our sell-out evening with Barry ‘Dame Edna’ Humphries but next year joining Colston Hall and Watershed as one of the festival’s main venues.”

Matt Lucas’s Banana Skins will take the format of a chat show interview, hosted by a celebrity guest and using questions and clips to look over Matt’s career so far, including his recent homage to ‘silent’ and visual comedy Pompidou (BBC, 2015),  followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Tickets are on sale now, priced £7 to £19.50. For more info and to book tickets, call 0845 40 24 001 or visit www.stgeorgesbristol.co.uk
